GOTV = Get Out The Vote
Renee and I spent a few hours phoning prospective voters on behalf of the Lake County Democrats yesterday evening. For those of you who know me well, you know that this is a big stretch for me... I am quite phone shy and dislike cold calling. I am more politically active than I ever dreamed possible. I have to channel this pre-election anxiety somehow.
My rationale is this: if Kerry loses this election, I want to know that I did all I could. We have a chance, right now, to change the game. The road we are on just will not work. A new one might not either, but at least there is a chance. This road leads to distortion and more war and disrespect and ultimately empire, domination and death: for earth, for humanity's chance at getting the energy equation right (Oil is the source of this war, believe me. Do your homework and you will find this to be true), and for our democracy. For those who wonder why I care so much just read this: Goals of the Republican Party.
The good news is: most of the people I called were very positive. Some even thanked me for volunteering.
Less than two weeks to go... I wonder if my psyche can handle the suspense...

In the pat few months I have been praying with a powerful book: Women's Uncommon Prayers. Friday morning's selection helped me to breathe easier. I offer it to you for the coming week:
Testimony (for my daughters)
I want to tell you
that the world is still beautiful.
I tell you that despite
children raped on city streets,
shot down in class rooms.
despite the slow poisons seeping
from old and hidden sins
into our air, soil, and water,
despite the thinning film
that encloses are aching world.
Despite my own terror and despair.
I want you to look again and again,
to recognize the tender grasses,
curled like baby's fine hairs
around you fingers, as a recurring
miracle, to see that the river rocks
shine like God, that the crisp
voices of the orange and gold
October leaves are laughing at death.
I want you to look beneath
the grass, to note
the fragile hieroglyphs
of ant, snail, bettle. I want
you to understand that you are
no more and no less necessary
than the brown recluse, the ruby-
throated humming bird, the humpback
whale, the profligate mimosa.
I want to say, like Neruda,
that I am waiting for
"a great and common tenderness"
that I still believe
we are capable of attention,
that anyone who notices the world
must want to save it. (Ms. Rebecca Baggett)
Thank you for stretching beyond your comfort zone to do more than you might have thought possible to bring about the change our country needs. I have been faithful to the visualization exercise -what a difference Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, will make. Already has for me through your passionate involvement. Thanks.
